Important Note to Users of Older Versions of BIBL
(any release prior to 5.50a)
Read this entire file before
beginning to convert your older
database.
With Release 5.50a, the database structure has been changed (a 7th note
line has been added and the descriptor field has had 10 more characters
added (now 70 characters long).
To use an older database with this new version of BIBL you must first run
the conversion utility BIBLUP.EXE...which will convert your database to
the new structure. BIBLUP will bring any 2.x or greater version of the
database up to date with the 5.50 structure.
How do you use BIBLUP?
First, you might want to make a backup copy of your existing *.DAT and
*.IX file(s). Then, copy BIBLUP.EXE to where thes database(s) are stored
(e.g., C:\BIBL). Type BIBLUP at the DOS prompt and then give the program
the name of the database you want to convert (e.g., if you have a BIBL5.DAT
file, respond with BIBL5.
You original database file will be renamed xxxxxx.OLD. Once you are satisfied
with the results of the conversion (that is, you've checked the new database
with the new version of BIBL and verify that everything looks OK), you can
delete the *.OLD file.
If you want to rename your BIBL.DAT or BIBL5.DAT database file to something
more meaningful, you may. For example, suppose you have a BIBL5.DAT and
BIBL5.IX file that you want to rename to BOOKS. Just rename BIBL5.DAT to
BOOKS.DAT and BIBL5.IX to BOOKS.IX. The *.DAT and *.IX files *MUST HAVE*
the same filename.
Also note that the file rebuild/repair utility (BRX.EXE) in this release
of BIBL replaces ALL previous versions of repair utilities. You MUST NOT
use BRX on your older database...it will only work with a 5.50 or later
database. After you make the BIBLUP conversion of a file, you may then
delete the repair/rebuild utility associated with the older versions. You
should not delete the older one until you are sure you have made a successful
conversion (since it will be needed to repair the database that failed
conversion).
How do you know conversion was successful?
To test for a successful conversion, run BIBLUP. Then activate the new
BIBL and using LIST, examine the last record in the file. Move backward
in the file a few records and if all data lines up with the proper field,
conversion was successful.
